Which shaft coupling is suitable for cleanroom and vacuum environments?

For cleanroom and vacuum motion, the NBK XSTS, XWSS and MSXP slit couplings are ultrasonically cleaned, generate low particles and offer zero backlash with excellent chemical and corrosion resistance. XSTS and XWSS use a SS 316L body; the MSXP uses a PEEK body that adds electrical insulation and ultra-low outgassing. Their machined slit pattern flexes to absorb misalignment with no separate wearing parts.

Overview

These slit-type couplings are designed for special environments, transmitting torque smoothly with low particle generation and zero backlash. The range comprises XSTS, XWSS and MSXP; all are chemical- and corrosion-resistant. The MSXP type additionally offers excellent electrical insulation and ultra-low outgassing.

Working principle

Each one-piece coupling has a cylindrical body with precisely machined slits forming an integrated flexible structure. Torque is transmitted directly through the continuous metallic (or PEEK) body, and the slit pattern lets it deform elastically to compensate angular, parallel and axial misalignment without separate components.

The symmetrical slit geometry gives uniform load distribution and high torsional stiffness while allowing controlled bending, delivering true zero-backlash performance and excellent rotational accuracy even under dynamic conditions.

Attachment types

XSTS, XWSS and MSXP are each available as a single-clamp type (C).
