What is a disc-type flexible coupling and when should I use one?

A disc-type flexible coupling connects two shafts through precision-machined hubs and one or more stainless-steel disc packs that flex to absorb angular, parallel and axial misalignment. Because torque passes directly through the metal discs, it delivers true zero backlash and very high torsional stiffness. That makes it ideal for high-speed, high-precision servo and stepper positioning. NBK offers it in short (XHS), standard (XHW) and long (XHW-L) forms.

Overview

The disc-type shaft coupling is available in three designs: XHW-C, XHS-C and XHW-C-L. XHS is a single-disc coupling; the other types use double disc packs. All discs are stainless steel 304.

Working principle

Two precision-machined hubs are joined by one or more stainless-steel disc packs, forming a rigid yet flexible structure. Torque is transmitted through the discs in tension and compression; during rotation the thin discs deform elastically to accommodate angular, parallel and axial misalignment without sliding parts or wear.

Because torque passes directly through the metal discs, the coupling provides very high torsional stiffness and true zero-backlash performance, giving excellent rotational accuracy and fast dynamic response for high-speed positioning systems.

Attachment types

Single clamp type (C) is available for XHW, XHS and XHW-L. The XHW standard type is also offered as a set-screw type (OD 10 mm) and adapter + clamping type (AC).
